Wishlist | Newport Folk Fest 2013 – Part Two

[P]art two of our Newport Folk Festival wishlist as compiled by the Music Savage gang. With winter coming down hard on us New Englanders we eagerly anticipate the music extravaganza this July and countdown the days until all our favorite bands converge on Rhode Island for one glorious weekend.

Again, if you have not already purchased tickets we highly suggest you do so now before they sell out >>Buy Tickets<<

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper

Maine native Aly Spaltro goes by the name of Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and was named Folk Artist of the Year by our very own Boston Music Awards in 2010, so it goes without saying that she should be a included in the lineup. Plus, we here at Music Savage are big fans and her involvement would make us happy.

Andrew Bird

Sure he’s been in the lineup before but that doesn’t mean that Andrew Bird shouldn’t whistle his way through another stellar set this year. With Break it Yourself, and its companion album Hands of Glory, making top albums of 2012 lists all over the internet, his presence would be most welcome.

Kingsley Flood

The Boston favorites would be a boisterous addition to the plugged in folk scene and we are pretty sure that the entire crowd would be just as rambunctious as the band after just one song. Kingsley Flood are well known for their fervid live performances and will bring an energetic jolt to lineup.

Daughter

North London trio Daughter would inject the festival with beautiful Brit-folk and would enthrall the crowd whether plugged in or acoustic. They would have already played the states by the time the festival comes around but here’s to hoping Newport would be a call worthy of a return trip.

Lord Huron

What festival would be complete without a touch of “cowboy dream folk”? This descriptive term was coined by Music Savage writer Courtney Leigh Allen, who would be quite pleased if the Los Angeles based band would hitch up their wagon to our coast for the weekend…. as would the rest of us. Their debut album Lonesome Dreams is a favorite and made many a “best of” list across the music blog landscape.

The Lone Bellow

The Brooklyn trio have just released their debut self-titled album and have already attracted so much attention that a stop at Newport this year would pack in a crowd eager to hear what all the buzz is about for this roots-rock band. With NPR catching on quickly the audience for the band fits the festival vibe, and given the extra months to attract even more attention the organizers would want to jump on this idea quick.

Willy Mason

New York songwriter Willy Mason has made a name for himself opening for the likes of Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Ben Kweller to name a few. His latest album, Carry On, is a perfect harmony of folk, blues and country making Mason a perfect choice for the 2013 lineup.

Local Natives

Los Angeles psych-folk rockers Local Natives are set to release their second album Hummingbird on January 29th and will have wrapped up their tour in support by the end of April, leaving all of summer open should Newport organizers come a-calling. Their live shows are known to get the crowd going and would make a weary, sunburned, gathering of music fans forget that it was the middle of summer for an hour or so.

Wolf Larsen

A guitar, microphone, and stool would be all San Francisco songwriter Wolf Larsen will need to put a noisy crowd under her spell. Her debut album Quiet at the Kitchen Door is a lush narrative of struggle and hope which will leave the Newport audience in stunned silence.

The Tallest Man on Earth

Swedish native Kristian Matsson goes by the moniker The Tallest Man on Earth and creates music perfectly suited for the Newport Folk Festival stage. With writers constantly comparing him to Bob Dylan, his chances of being a fest favorite again in 2013 are nearly perfect.
