Song of the Week | Mammút - The Moon Will Never Turn On Me
The latest edition of the WFMO X Music Savage Show “Song of the Week” spotlight is focused on Reykjavik today as this year’s Iceland Airwaves gets underway and all of the country’s musical talent is on full display for five glorious days. Today’s selection is the amazing song, “The Moon Will Never Turn On Me,” from Reykjavik’s Mammút. It is off their brilliant new album, Kinder Versions, released this summer on Bella Union.
The five-piece formed as Mammút in 2004 and quickly gained an audience in their home country after winning Músiktilraunir, which is the Icelandic battle of the bands, that very same year. In 2006 they released their self-titled debut album and have continued to win awards, and gain new fans, around the world. They are well known for their dynamic and intense live shows, with lead-singer Katrína Mogensen twisting and flailing her body against the sound like a tree caught in a hurricane. It’s something to behold and I am very lucky to have seen this tremendous band in 2015 and 2016 while attending Iceland Airwaves.
Kinder Versions in Mammut’s first album written entirely in English, making their music more accessible to an international audience. This does not take away any of the Nordic nuance found in their earlier work. The style and sound of Islandia still resonates in each track and the music will transport you to the land of fire and ice quicker than an airline ticket.
