The latest edition in the WFMO X Music Savage Show “Song of the Week” spotlight shines down brightly on the brilliant new single, “Semester”, by Dear Boy. The Los Angeles quartet released their excellent, self-titled, debut EP in 2013 and put themselves on everyone’s radar with appearances at Austin’s SXSW festival along with touring alongside some pretty major acts like Cloud Nothings, Peter Murphy, and Sunflower Bean to name a few.
Dear Boy are Ben Grey (vocals/guitar), Austin Hayman (guitar), Lucy Lawrence (bass) and Keith Cooper (drums). The song was self-produced by the band with Jackson Phillips of Day Wave contributing along with Tony Hoffer (Air/Beck/Phoenix) providing the masterful mixing. The influences of the nineties UK music scene can be heard in the track’s ringing guitars and beautifully wistful lyrics. It’s a Britpop blending of all the greats! Teenage Fanclub? Yes indeed! The LAs? You know it! Lush? If you don’t hear it you’re nuts! The Housemartins? Without a doubt! They have managed to create a unique sound that is full of California sun on the outside and swirling with London fog on the inside.
Look for the band’s new release, The Strawberry EP, which will be out March 1st via their own label Easy Hell and Burnside/The Orchard.
