Review | Rhett Miller - The Dreamer
Old 97’s frontman and solo artist extraordinaire Rhett Miller delivers another dreamy Saturday afternoon album (appropriately title The Dreamer), the first on his own Maximum Sunshine label, affirming his place as one of the hardest-working men in rock n’ roll. After five solo albums and many Old 97’s releases, you would think a break would be in order, but luckily for his fans Miller’s music is his life. We, the humble listeners, get to sit back on a porch, perhaps with a refreshing summer cocktail, and take in his new offering. The delightful opening track “Lost Without Love” is a rollicking two-step number about realizing what you had after it’s too late, and hoping that there is still a chance to make it right… something we can all relate to, especially Rhett Miller, who seems to have a quite a lovelorn track record.
The new album sees the return of Rachel Yamagata, who has worked with Rhett before, as well as new vocal contributions from Heather Robb of The Spring Standards fame, and the one and only Rosanne Cash. All the tracks on The Dreamer benefit from the additional vocals, but the standout track is “As Close As I Came to Being Right,” with Rhett and Rosanne switching lead vocal duties between verses and making one hell of an amazing song.
Rhett Miller has been recording music and touring for over 2 decades, with no signs of stopping. He is currently on tour to promote The Dreamer, and will be stopping in Boston this October for a show at The Royale with the Old 97’s on their 15th anniversary tour. That means he is opening up for his own band! I highly suggest you go.
