Sometimes a Cloud Is Just a Cloud, but a Fruit Bats concert is never just a concert.
Last Thursday, a throng of music fans packed The Sinclair in Cambridge to welcome Eric D. Johnson and his bandmates back to the area. The sold-out room was smiling and bobbing from the first notes of amazingly talented opener Johanna Samuels through to the last ringing notes of the Fruit Bats’ incredibly perfect set (the closer was “Humbug Mountain” for those keeping track.)
Touring behind Sometimes a Cloud Is Just a Cloud: Slow Growers, Sleeper Hits and Lost Songs—a compilation of 23 songs including demos and previously unreleased tracks spanning the last two decades—Johnson undoubtedly has enough stellar material to play for days on end. Some might say he’s even reached Hall and Oates status. While Eric himself might disagree—I think everyone in attendance would have happily listened for another couple of sets, at the very least.
