Chris Bathgate – In The City (from Daytrotter)
Looking for something new? Something really, really, really just goddamn good? Go download Chris Bathgate’s latest full-length album, Salt Year. The Ann Arbor Michigan artist has more than a few albums under his name, and has really perfected a multi-layered folk sound accented by his voice. There’s the standard guitar and drums, but there’s also piano, strings, banjo and horns (see Furs Curled on the Sad Road) that all meld in perfectly with Bathgate’s lyrics to create just a really great overall sound.
Bathgate described the ideas in Salt Year as ideas that “are about Love versus Time.” On the album’s last track,
Everything (overture) Bathgate sings, “Every love I’ve pushed away, no matter how far I stray, it still remains.”
But many of the songs have elements about every day life and life in Michigan, and because of that, it
just sounds so beautifully American. They songs would make great road trip music, or rainy day music. Or any day music
for that matter.
If you want to hear a few more songs, Chris Bathgate recorded a Daytrotter session last week. But seriously every single song off this album is truly great. You can grab it in its entirety here.
