Live Review | Dark Dark Dark + Emily Wells + The Novel Ideas at Great Scott

[L]ast week we were treated to a nice show at Great Scott. It seems as though a lot of people were excited to see this show, as I arrived at the venue to see a line out the door, even on a cold night in Allston, everyone was excited to see this one.
The night was highlighted by Emily Wells’ standout set. She mans the stage entirely alone, creating loops based off of the many instruments she plays while on stage, looping them all together with heavy bassy beats. It’s really something to hear, the elegance of a violin with a hip-hop styled back beat and Emily’s feathery vocals made for a really interesting set.
Dark Dark Dark came to town with their extraordinary sound, a combination of avant-garde / baroque folk that mixes with a sort of noir / cirque sound. It makes for a really interesting and exciting sound and on stage they sounded pretty great.
Starting the evening was folk / pop locals The Novel Ideas, who for me turned my head, with their carefully crafted folk / pop songs, who seemed to delight the audience as well. If you haven’t gotten a chance, give these guys a listen, their entire album is available on their website for free.
It was a fun evening, great music for a cold fall night, as we descend further into the winter, the sounds inside warmed us amongst a wide range of musical stylings.
