J. Roddy Walston & The Business - Marigold
[I]’m writing this from my hotel room in San Francisco, as I’ve had this new tune from J. Roddy Walston & the Business on repeat while I wait out my turn for the shower. Well, as expected, its a total foot stomper, “Marigold,” from their upcoming record Essential Tremors, the classic “Girl meets boy who is pretending to be a girl, who is poor and an artist and dabbling in drug usage because it’s all art and his trust fund says so,” story, perfect material for a song with a driving piano force that feels a bit Jerry Lee Lewis, a bit Chuck Berry, but with J. Roddy’s whiskey soaked vocals, and a ragged southern kind of vibe that feels like a mild hangover a dirty motel and an empty bottle of jack, or whatever that means.
Look for Essential Tremors on ATO records, September 10th.
