Charles Bradley

We here at Music Savage mourn the loss of the extraordinary Charles Bradley who passed away today at the age of 68 after a long battle with stomach cancer. We were so fortunate to have last seen this amazing man perform a full set at this year’s All Newport’s Eve show on July 27th at Newport Blues Cafe. Bradley had just wonderfully rebounded, after having to cancel a number of shows while going through treatment, and the crowd that night was eagerly awaiting his return to the stage.
The moment he appeared the audience let loose with an ovation that went on and on while Charles stood center-stage seemingly getting stronger with each shout of love from the people packed in tight below him. Full of energy, and with the strength and conviction of someone half his age, he shared his heart and soul with us for nearly two hours without ever looking tired…he even came back out for an incredible encore!
This was a man that loved what he did and we loved him for it. None of us attending Newport Folk Festival knew that this would be his last year gracing us with his larger than life presence. Charles Bradley was adored by so many and his light will be missed dearly.
Rest In Peace Screaming Eagle of Soul.
